Microsoft acquires Activision

Activision Blizzard is a video game holding company that was formed in 2008 through the merger of Activision and Vivendi Games. It is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. Activision Blizzard is known for publishing and developing popular video game franchises such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Diablo, and Candy Crush Saga. The company operates through its various subsidiaries and studios, including Activision, Blizzard Entertainment, King, and others. Activision Blizzard has a significant presence in the gaming industry and is one of the largest and most successful game publishers globally.


In January 2022, it was announced that Microsoft would acquire Activision Blizzard in a deal valued at $68.7 billion. The acquisition is expected to close in 2023, subject to regulatory approvals. If the acquisition is completed, Activision Blizzard will become part of Microsoft, joining other subsidiaries like Mojang Studios (creators of Minecraft) and Bethesda Softworks (known for franchises like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout). The acquisition is seen as a strategic move by Microsoft to expand its presence in the gaming industry and strengthen its Xbox ecosystem.
